The Old Poets Corner is Runner Up in Nationwide Search for Britain’s Best Local Pub
In a nationwide search to find Britain’s best local gems, the UK’s leading holiday letting agency, cottages4you has today announced The Old Poets Corner in Ashover, Chesterfield as runner up in the Best Local Pub category.
Throughout the year, cottages4you has called on holidaymakers and locals to nominate the best independent businesses across the UK for its Go Local guide which is now its second year. Full of customer recommendations of things to do as well as places to visit, eat and drink, the guide supports those local businesses which go above and beyond to enhance the UK holidaymakers’ experience.
The Old Poets Corner was recognised for its extensive range of beers and cider, its excellent customer service and function room facilities and its homemade sausage recipe!
As part of the shortlisting process, the inn was visited by a cottages4you ‘mystery shopper’ who reviewed it against a series of tough criteria and was finally selected as runner up by the Go Local judging panel.
Bill Gibb, Chief Reporter at The Sunday Post and Go Local judge said: “It took a lot of time and consideration to pick between the contenders in this category; there were some truly outstanding candidates. The fantastic value for money and a huge selection of ales make Old Poets Corner a stop-off you’ll be glad you popped into.”
Kim Beresford, Managing Director at The Old Poets Corner said, “This national award makes all of the hard work worthwhile - we have a great team here at The Old Poets Corner. What we were judged on is what we do 365 days a year and that is to make people feel happy, welcome and at home, so this recognition means a great deal to us.”

The prestigious National Cider Pub of the Year Award has gone to our very own Old Poets' Corner in Ashover, with the judges being delighted to honour a pub outside of traditional cider making areas such as Herefordshire and Somerset.
The above image shows the presentation being made by CAMRA's Regional Cider Coordinator, Andrea Briers, to Kim & Jackie Beresford. This took place at lunchtime on Tuesday 3rd October and the occasion attracted members of the Branch and regional reps. A team from Look North reported it for that evening's news. Even the famous Wurzels' I am a Cider Drinker' song graced the noteworthy occasion!
An ever-changing range of five ciders plus at least one perry has been built up from just one tub in 2004. To mark CAMRA's Cider Month, a cider week starts on 14th October, during which there will be an even greater range of ciders and perries on sale.
This may be just the boost that traditional cider campaigners in the area have been waiting for. Several new pubs have already decided to serve real cider and perry during October and it is hoped that this will attract an ever growing army of cider drinkers. So get yourselves down to your nearest outlet and support our Cider campaign across the region!
